Phase – C4
C4 Phase
Subclass of:
Superclass of:
Scope note:
This class models phenomena in time and space that involve one or more persitent items and are conceptualized as homeomeric units that unfold over a period of time: their temporal parts are described, in the intension of the class, by the very expression used for the whole event. E.g. a part of a relationship between two persons is also a relationship between these two persons. In the unfolding of time, there can be moments where the phenomena are not actual, but the substance of the phenomenon do not change, like a more or less active relationship between persons or the stopping and resting when you go for a long walk. This class is inspired by the DOLCE definition of stative perdurants but adapted to the context of the CIDOC CRM and therefore modelled as a coherent set of spatio-temporal events.
This class is disjoint with the Activity – E7 class, which focus on specific intentional activities, and Beginning of Existence – E63 or End of Existence – E64 classes which express achievements and models substantially unitary phenomena. E63 and E64 instances can start or end phases.

A phase is modelled as sub-class of crm:E4 Period and its substance is to be a collection of coherent crm:E5 events. Therefore, inevitably: yes, it necessarily habe a spatial dimension.

Does a phase necessarily have a spatial dimension? And if so, can it have more than one? In this case, it must correspond to its maximum spatial projection during its duration.
