Social Event – C2
C2 Social Event
Subclass of:
Superclass of:
Scope note:
This class models time-related phenomena (like an election or a marriage) that happen in collective intentionality and are perceived in a specific social context, i.e. persons sharing the same point of view or conceptualization.
[under revision]
These persons do not necessarily act together, and are therefore not per se a group (crm:E74 Group), but they share the same social representations stemming from education, professional and social engagement, media, etc. Situations exist insofar as they satisfy descriptions, i.e. sets of propositions that provide the content of the corresponding social representations. In other words, social situations are perceived in and carved out of events (states of affairs) by humans belonging to social contexts and sharing social representations, they are interpretations of states of affairs from a specific point of view, the social one.
These phenomena involve entities that exist in the physical world, and are observable, but they have no direct reference to geographical space in the sense of happening somewhere on the Earth (they are just present in the minds of the persons belonging to the relevant social collective or context). Insofar as they involve persons, physical objects and also geographical places as such (e.g. considering that this district is under the jurisdiction of this authority), they can have a projection in physical space but this does not belong to their substance which is situated only in human minds and the social space, i.e. in collective intentionality.
A social situation is initiated and ended by social events, and has limited duration in time, being related to the existence of the social context that carries it in the collective intentionality of its members. It is possible to have knowledge about a specific situation which existed in earlier times event if the phenomenon as such does not exist beyond the existence of the social context carrying these specific social representations, in the sense of considering them as valid.
